Modern artwork on canvas, 20,01×9,84 inches (51x25cm) acrylic and oil on canvas, 2024
Black and white painting depicting two figures in a fight. The figure on the left has a beard and wears a decorated dress; it is the Persian King **Darius the Great**, who kills the lion **Ahriman** in bas-relief. The figure on the right has features that resemble a lion, with a mane and muzzle. Both figures are stylized with abstract patterns and shapes, giving the work an expressive, perhaps cubist, influence.
The artwork Painted by the artist Seville appears to be a reference to a historical bas-relief representing **Darius the Great**, well-known ruler of the Achaemenid Empire.
Darius I of Persia, known as “the Great”, was the fourth Persian king of the Achaemenid Empire and ruled from 522 BC. until his death in 486 BC. He was an influential leader who expanded the Achaemenid empire and introduced many administrative and financial reforms. Under his reign, the capital was moved from Pasargadae to Persepolis, which he embellished with gardens and palaces, making it a city of great art and culture.
