TITLE: “I CONTRABBANDIERI”
The modern painting features a cubist-style landscape of Amalfi, Positano, Naples and the Amalfi Coast. The painting is animated by numerous boats carrying contraband cigarettes, with smugglers busy unloading cartons of Marlboro. This work depicts one of the oldest professions at sea, which took place both on the open sea and in the port. The smugglers, with their powerful motorboats, would flee from the Guardia di Finanza or the Port Authority when the situation became critical.
The painting has a beautiful blue choppy sea as a backdrop, and in the distance you can see the islands of Ischia and Procida. The smugglers are dressed a bit like pirates, giving life to the motto “the habit does not make the man”.
Growing up on the streets of his hometown, artist Alessandro Siviglia frequently encountered men peddling contraband cigarettes in hidden alleyways. Inspired by these encounters and influenced by films about smuggling, Siviglia embarked on creating a work that is truly unconventional, fresh, and vibrant. This piece reflects his unique perspective and ingenuity, breaking away from traditional boundaries to present something entirely original and sparkling.
This painting serves as both a captivating landscape and a poignant reminder. Its beauty lies in its depiction of the coast, evoking memories of serene seascapes. However, it also carries a deeper significance, prompting us to reflect on the countless desperate individuals who undertook arduous labor just to earn enough to feed their families. This duality makes the artwork not only visually appealing but also profoundly thought-provoking.
