Across the scene appear figures and memories tied both to the city’s history and to the artist’s own life. Among them is the fire‑eater, a symbol of the childhood walks Alessandro took with his parents—a street performer who fascinated him as a child and now returns to the canvas as a cherished fragment of memory. Nearby, the puppet theatre—still present along the promenade—adds a touch of tradition and continuity.

Two fishermen represent the artist’s cousin and maternal uncle, while the elderly man strolling and the fishmonger—an iconic figure often associated with Salerno’s character—complete this slice of everyday life.

In the distance rise the rocks of the Pennello, a small tourist harbor where young couples meet to exchange kisses and confidences. A nod to the city’s illustrious past also appears: the Salerno Medical School, a medieval center of excellence, accompanied by its patron Saint Matthew and the Madonna of the Sea, both deeply rooted in local culture.

Above the scene stands the Arechi Castle, built by the Aragonese, while the mountain behind it forms the silhouette of the famous “sleeping man,” a natural symbol of the city. The sun, bright and vibrant like the one over Salerno, is surrounded by seahorses—the emblem of the local football team, the Salernitana.

Two final figures complete the composition: the black “cangatto,” perhaps a symbol of mourning for the artist’s mother, and the artist himself, portrayed while observing the panorama. It is his way of expressing how every corner of this city brings him back to her presence and her love.
