Title “Combattimento tra Cavalieri”
Contemporary art work, mixed technique on canvas, 19,6 x 19,6 inches (50×50 cm), A. Siviglia 2020
A cubist‑style painting, unmistakably in the spirit of Alessandro Siviglia, portraying a horseback battle between medieval warriors. The scene unfolds as a clash between Western knights and Middle Eastern fighters, a confrontation that echoes ancient epics and cultural encounters across centuries.
The work recalls the intensity of Mori contro Cristiani, another of Siviglia’s iconic battle scenes, though here the narrative is condensed into a much more intimate scale. The title, “Combat Between Knights”, speaks for itself: a duel of cultures, symbols, and energies colliding on the canvas.
Just like in the related painting La Storia Continua, the entire battle is compressed into a small 50×50 cm canvas, yet it bursts with detail. Figures overlap and intertwine, horses rear up, swords cross, and faces—fragmented in pure cubist fashion—create a whirlwind of motion.
The orange background amplifies the tension and vibrancy of the scene, making every line and color pulse with life.
Despite its modest size, the painting radiates extraordinary dynamism. Every centimeter is alive: a fragment of armor, a horse’s eye, a blade, a gesture. The viewer is drawn into the chaos of battle, compelled to follow the rhythm of the composition and discover new details with every glance.
A small yet powerful masterpiece, capable of condensing Siviglia’s narrative force, symbolism, and chromatic energy into a compact, explosive square of pure storytelling.
