Medusa

**Medusa** is a painting by the Italian artist Alessandro Siviglia. The painting depicts Medusa in the foreground, wrapped in intertwined snakes that constitute her hair, with a hypnotic gaze that seems to petrify those who observe her. The Medusa of ancient Greece has now become an icon for many artists, writers, poets, and even major brands.

The artist often depicts Medusa because he likes the subject very much, but also to share her story. There are several narratives about Medusa, but the one the artist prefers is this: Medusa was one of the three daughters of the marine deities Phorcys and Ceto, and she was the most beautiful of the three. Targeted by Poseidon, she was captured and raped by him. Athena found out and punished her for lying (raped) with Poseidon by transforming her into a monster with snake hair and a deadly gaze. Indeed, anyone who looked Medusa in the eyes was turned to stone.

An ancient story that still reflects today’s chronicles of abuse against women. Medusa, a beautiful and desired woman to the point of being violated by a man of significant social standing (Poseidon). Athena represents the prejudices and criticisms that do not delay in arriving at those who suffer violence, such as “she asked for it” or “she was no good.” This story makes us reflect deeply on what happens in cases of violence against women. Medusa means “protector” in Greek, and this painting is dedicated to all the women who need protection and attention from all of us.

The painting can decorate a boat or a living room in a large house with gold accents or a baroque style. Unique modern paintings on Greece that Siviglia often paints, and you can find them on the website or by writing to us on WhatsApp.
