TITLE: “Piccola Medusa”
Modern artwork, 27.17 x 26.77 inches (69 x 68 cm) mixed technique acrylic and spray on canvas, Siviglia 2025
This enchanting portrait captures the head of Medusa, set against a rich red background and elegantly framed in gold. Medusa is a captivating and multifaceted figure in Greek mythology. While often regarded as a monster capable of petrifying anyone who met her gaze, she was originally an extraordinarily beautiful young girl. Her transformation into a creature with snakes for hair was not due to seduction, but rather a punishment from the goddess Athena after Medusa was raped by Poseidon in Athena’s sacred temple. Ultimately, Medusa met her end at the hands of Perseus, who was ensnared in a scheme by the king of Seriphos, Polydectes, who hoped Perseus would not survive the perilous mission. Despite the odds, Perseus succeeded in beheading Medusa, carrying her head in a bag and using Pegasus to escape from her vengeful sisters.
The tragic and sorrowful tale of Medusa serves as a powerful reminder that appearances can be deceiving, and those we deem as monsters may merely be victims of circumstance. This painting, an original work by the internationally renowned artist Alessandro Siviglia, is rendered on canvas using acrylic and spray paints, and is beautifully enclosed in a handcrafted golden frame.
