Carnival in Ivrea
Alessandro Siviglia decorated a cart for the Carnival in Ivrea, entitled “The Heralds of the Queen”.
The cart represents, with typical traits of the artist, medieval scenes with the Heralds of Queen Berta, the consort of King Arduino. The Heralds were messengers used in the military for declaring war or giving notice of surrender.
The choice of the female figure of Queen Berta is a tribute to the legendary Violetta, for her love for the people and for her strength and courage against all forms of tyranny.
The Carnival of Ivrea.
Ivrea’s Carnival is the oldest historical Carnival in Italy, a unique event in which history and legend give life to a great popular civic festival. Famous for the spectacular Battle of the Oranges that takes place for three days in the main squares of the city, the Carnival is characterized by a ceremonial complex that draws on different historical periods.
The spirit of the Historical Carnival of Ivrea lives in the re-enactment of the rebellion of the people against the Marquis of Monferrato who starved the city. According to the legend, it was the heroic gesture of Violetta, the daughter of a miller, who freed the people from tyranny.
During the three days of carnival, the traditional parade takes place along the city streets. Floats, folk groups and musical bands all take a part.
The Battle of the Oranges is the most awaited moment of the Carnival, in which the rebellion of the people is remembered, who are the orange throwers on foot without protection, against the feudal tyranny, represented by the shooters on the floats, with their protections inspired by the armor of the knights.
